Week 2 did not warm us up. It hit us in the face. Teams showed who they actually are, not who the preseason hype pretended they might be. Ohio State
Stayed No. 1. Week 2: demolished Grambling 70-0. This was textbook team football. Julian Sayin looked calm and violent. He threw for 306 yards and four first half touchdowns. The defense shut the door and the offense piled up 651 total yards. That is national title level depth and execution right now. One stat that matters: 651 yards and a shutout.
LSU
Holds at No. 2. Week 2: beat Louisiana Tech 23-7. Ugly, efficient, needed win. Garrett Nussmeier managed the game and finished with a clean line. The defense limited Louisiana Tech to about 154 total yards. Championship teams win low-variance games like that. Stat that matters: opponent held to 154 yards.
Georgia
Remains elite. Week 2: beat Austin Peay 28-6. The score undersells the trench control. Georgia ran physical football, finished drives late, and kept junk drives off the scoreboard. This is the kind of clock-control, defense-first performance that keeps an undefeated resume believable.
Penn State
Balanced and mean. Week 2: shut out FIU 34-0. Drew Allar was efficient, the run game produced chunks, and the front seven won the field position battle. A Week 2 shutout is not padding. It proves your defense will bail you out when the offense stalls. Stat that matters: 34-0.
Oregon
Offense is terrifying. Week 2: pummeled Oklahoma State 69-3. Dante Moore spread the ball. The Ducks used depth at running back and receiver and scored in waves. When you put up 69 on a Power Five opponent, you move up. Number to remember: 69 points and roster-wide big-play production.
Miami
Execution night, stays in the Top 10. Week 2: beat Bethune-Cookman 45-3. Carson Beck was surgical, 22-of-24 for about 264 yards and two touchdowns, and he started the night with 15 straight completions. Not a marquee résumé win, but the efficiency and complementary play validate Miami’s spot. Stat that matters: 22-for-24 with a 15-completion start.
Texas
Rebounded, but questions remain. Week 2: handled San José State 38-7. Arch Manning answered with a big day and the offense showed it can explode. The Week 1 problems — penalties and red-zone blanks — are still real. The ceiling is massive. Discipline is the deciding variable. Stat that matters: 38 points, but penalties remain a liability.
Florida State
Statement game. Week 2: routed East Texas A&M 77-3. Tommy Castellanos led a 700-plus-yard offensive outburst. Scoring on 10 straight drives is execution, not luck. If FSU keeps this level of play, the national conversation flips fast. Stat that matters: 77 points and sustained scoring drives.
Notre Dame
Still relevant, but vulnerable. Week 2: off-week after the opener loss to Miami. No new tape this weekend, so their ranking is held on reputation and last week’s competitiveness. Close losses stack up and pollster trust erodes. Notre Dame has talent, but they need clean wins to stop the narrative bleed.
Illinois
Cracks the Top 10. Week 2: beat Duke 45-19. Luke Altmyer threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns and Illinois flipped the game after halftime. They forced turnovers and converted them into points. That kind of authoritative road performance against a power-conference opponent earns a Top 10 spot. Stat that matters: 45 points and a second-half takeover.
